This past weekend marked the end of the road racing season for me. ABD’s Fall Fling is the finale for the roadie unwilling to let the racing season end. Here are the highlights as far as I saw them.
- Tom Doughty is an old man but damn what a fast old man. He swept the 55 plus age group and took second in the 40 plus age group and that meant he needed to double up on the road races, crits, TT’s and the circuit race. He rolled a VERY fast 16:14 time trial on Saturday then won the 55 plus circuit race in a two rider break where he towed HeadsMACK around for all but the first 2 laps of the race then came back and helped drive the winning break with me in the 40 plus race. I hope in 10 year when I’m his age that I’ll be able to even get a leg over the top tube, let alone have the form he has
- The 40 plus break included two of my long time heroes, the aforementioned Doughty and Fabio Orlandi. The break was a blast.
- HeadsMACK did himself a favor when after not taking a pull in the entire break in the 40 plus race he promised to lead the sprint out, and true to his word he did. Problem is, he started the lead out with about a half mile to go and dropped me off in the uphill head wind final stretch with 400 meters to go. OUCH. I tried to sprint to get Doughty to the line but I crapped out with 250 to go and left Doughty in the wind too far from the line.
- The sMACKs didn’t do RobosMACK any favors in their bid to keep him in second place in the overall standings. Robo chased me every time I attacked, which I knew I he would do, but seriously, he had 5 team mates who should have chased me when I attacked but it fell on his shoulders and in the end, it buggered him really badly as he fell from 2nd to 5th in the overall.
- ABD did a great job giving us interesting courses on which to race and the wind whipped up to make the racing selective.
Rode the Lakefront today because I wanted to. We are now in the “want to” time of year rather that the “have to” part of the year as far as bike riding goes. Funny how I never really feel like to “have to” ride. For me it’s always been a “get to” thing.
Why would an alleged fiscal conservative not want to address a part of the economy that 10 years ago was 8% of the national budget and is currently 16% and will in less than 10 years double again to sap a third of the national budget, endangering the national economy and draining resources from both the public and private sector coffers? Just a thought.
This weekend The Lovely Kathy and I will be heading to Lakeside, MI. Here is our itinerary.

“… monster with two backs …”
You are going for a ride on a tandem? How romantic. Who’s the stoker?

Why not address health care? Because the right wing hates America and wants it to fail.
